burnley
turf moor
Tuesday 17th March 1987 thought I would pay a visit to Turf Moor before Burnley could get relegated out of the league altogether, They were entertaining Northampton Town who at the time were run away leaders with an eighteen point gap on second placed Preston, Having won 24 and losing only twice in the 33 games they had played, Burnley were heading perilously down the league so much so that with one game left of the season they sat in last place and needing to win and others above them to lose or draw so they could leapfrog them, Fortunately for Burnley they actually managed to beat Orient 2 1 and survived the drop into the oblivion of Non League football.
The game itself was a close affair and to the shock of Northampton, Burnley went on to win 2 1, Hoskin and Gallagher scoring for Burnley, with Henry scoring for Northampton.
BURNLEY: Neenan, Leebrook, Hampton, Rodaway, Gallagher, Deakin, Grewcock, Malley, Caughey, Hoskin, Britton
NORTHAMPTON: Gleasure, Reed, Logan, Chard, Wilcox, McPherson, Henry, Benjamin, Gilbert, Morley, Hill
ATTENDANCE: 2,686
